STANDARDVISION ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: A RADIANT CELEBRATION OF LIGHT AND LIFE FROM CHRISTY LEE ROGERS

For the months of November and December, StandardVision has curated a site-specific showcase from visual poet Christy Lee Rogers on view across a number of StandardVision’s large-scale exterior displays throughout Los Angeles until December 31st, 2024.

StandardVision

A master of light and shadow, Christy Lee Rogers harnesses the untamable force of water to create ethereal worlds, where human figures are suspended in a ballet of fluid motion and raw emotion. Her work has often been compared to Baroque painting masters like Caravaggio and Rubens, with dramatic chiaroscuro light; yet it pulses with its own celestial rhythm—where darkness surrenders to the soft radiance of light, and each image feels like a snapshot from a dream.

Emerging from the darkest depths and exploding in a burst of light, Christy Lee Rogers’ photographs in The Muses are sure to inspire. Figures and fabric combust in radiant scenes evoking memories of passion, tragedy, and playful exuberance. Since antiquity, muses have been called upon by artists to aid in the writing of poetry and heart wrenching dramas, to guide the feet of dancers, to inspire laughter, or to provoke deep contemplation of history and the stars. Throughout the exhibit, visitors will be encouraged to imagine, engage, and create based on inspiration gained from The Muses.

ROGERS' WORKS ON EXHIBIT IN CHINA WITH ART LABOR AT MIRROR SPACE

Art Labor Gallery, in collaboration with Mirror Space will host a group exhibition in Shaoxing China.

“IN THE FLOW”

This exhibition employs water as the curatorial thread. It presents a rich tapestry of works by various artists who have ingeniously used water as their creative theme. The journey commences from the geographical location of the Mirror Space, nestled next to a tranquil lake. It leads to a profound understanding of the pivotal role water has played in artistic creations spanning ancient to modern times, from China to the rest of the world. Artists have masterfully used the fluidity, transparency, and reflective properties of water as a metaphor to express their emotions, thoughts, and criticisms. In their works, water is not merely the theme of creation, a visual element, but also a carrier of emotions, and a psychological landscape.

CHRISTY LEE ROGERS' ITALIAN MOSAIC WALL IN THE LOBBY ENTRANCE OF THE MONDRIAN HOTEL IN HONG KONG

Artist Christy Lee Rogers' Italian Mosaic Wall in the Lobby Entrance of the new Mondrian Hotel in Hong Kong, Underwater Baroque Art

“Guests arrive at The Mondrian's ground-level glass-fronted lobby after strolling through what feels like the middle of a John Woo film set. Inside is equally cinematic, with a modern-Baroque wall mosaic of underwater dancers and colourful seaweeds, based on the aquatic photography of Christy Lee Rogers, looming over two storeys. It's the start of an artistic set that feels a far cry from what are usually very dull hotel art collections, with fairytale sea creatures swimming along the corridor wallpaper…”
-Lee Cobaj, Condé Nast Traveller

Its immersive, gallery-like interiors fall right into place amid this landscape, featuring designs conjured by the wild imagination of Karin Krautgartner.
